Report ON THE ETHS CLASS OF '58 53nd REUNION
North Shore - September 8-11, 2011

See the pictures here.

The ETHS Class of 1958 held its 53rd Reunion on the North Shore Sept. 8-11 this year with 57 attendees – many from the Chicago area as well as from 13 other states from California to Connecticut.

After the 50th Reunion many expressed the desire to meet every year.  As one classmate put it, “Who knows how many of us will be here for the 55th – let’s do this every year!”  So, the loosely structured Reunion Committee decided to hold annual Reunions alternating between Evanston and other areas of the country in the hope of including those who are reluctant to travel back to the Chicago area.

This year, the out-of-towners gathered in a corner of “Frank’s Place” bar at the Northbrook Hilton from 5-7 on Thursday evening.  It’s always such fun to see old friends that we haven’t seen since last year and catch up with what’s going on in their lives.

Geoff Wilson, once again volunteered to set up a golf event on Thurs. and Fri.  Fourteen golfers played at Wilmette Golf Club and Glencoe Golf Club

On Friday, the non-golfers ventured forth on a private bicycle tour of the Chicago near-north neighborhoods.  Highlights included the Gold Coast Mansions, Oprah’s pent house, the former Playboy Mansion, Lincoln Park, Old Town, North Avenue Beach and the lakefront. We got a slightly late start, but still managed the circuit in about 3 hours.  Even those of us who once lived on the Near North after college learned a lot about the area from our delightful guide and Chicago historian.   After the tour, we adjourned to Butch McGuire’s tavern for lunch.  Butch’s is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year so for some of us it was a nostalgic place for lunch and a brew after the bike tour.

Friday evening it’s become the tradition to spend the cocktail hour at Hackneys.  We enjoyed snacks, an open bar, and unlimited talk and camaraderie.

Northwestern played Eastern Ill. on Saturday and Dave Burgess graciously offered to arrange for tickets for us as well as hosting a pre-game tail gate party.  It was a perfect day for a game and the tailgate party was fun – some “youngsters” in the slot next to us were intrigued by this “old” bunch celebrating our 53rd and cajoled us into actually singing the ETHS fight song.

Thanks to Marilyn Thomas Adams, we were able to reserve the Sheridan Shore Yacht Club at Wilmette Harbor for Saturday evening.  Once more, the weather cooperated and we gathered out on the deck overlooking the harbor, under the stars for cocktails before an excellent buffet dinner.

On Sunday morning, several of us met  in the Algauer’s restaurant at the Hilton for breakfast and then a group of nearly 20 gathered in our “hospitality” room to talk about where we want to hold the 54th.  The consensus was that we should do it in mid to late September somewhere in the Washington, DC/ Virginia area.

It was a wonderful four days of hanging out with old friends and spending some relaxed time getting to know others.  A great group!  We are lucky – all of us – to have graduated from ETHS in ’58 and to enjoy reconnecting with old friends and classmates over 50 years later!

Lovingly submitted,
